Your Spring HVAC Maintenance Checklist

Spring is an excellent time for HVAC maintenance. The weather is typically mild and you’ll be glad you were proactive once the heat of summer hits.

Here are six simple tasks to help you complete your spring HVAC maintenance checklist:

  1. Replace your filters: It’s essential to change your air filters regularly because dirty filters can block airflow and hurt the efficiency of your HVAC system. This could lead to poor air quality and potential issues with your system. Try to set reminders to change your filters every three months!

  2. Clean around your outdoor unit: Your condenser is the outdoor component of your HVAC system, typically found at the side or back of your home. If your outdoor unit isn’t maintained properly, it can accumulate dirt, dust, and grass clippings, affecting the unit’s ability to do its job. Blocked condensers can also become extremely energy-inefficient, leading to higher electrical bills.

  3. Test your air conditioning: A warm spring day is an opportune time to test your air conditioning and make sure it's working properly before the temperatures start to rise.

  4. Adjust your programmable thermostat: Spring is a good time to adjust the temperature schedule on your programmable thermostat. If you’re gone during the day and don’t have pets at home, you could set the air conditioner to keep your home at a slightly warmer temperature while you’re away.

  5. Check air conditioner drainage: A blocked condensate drain line could cause water to settle and mold may develop. These mold spores can spread through the HVAC system, your ducts, and indoor air. Blockages can also reduce system efficiency or cause water to overflow, damaging the ceilings, walls, or foundation. This is something your HVAC technician will check during your routine checks, but it doesn’t hurt to check it yourself regularly. Here’s a quick video to show you what to look out for.

  6. Schedule a maintenance check: Speaking of routine checks, the spring is one of the best times of year to schedule an HVAC maintenance check. The demand for emergency service visits peaks in the summer and winter, making it more difficult to schedule a simple inspection for your system! Being proactive and having your system checked in the spring and fall is the best way to get ahead of potential issues.

We understand that life is busy and it’s easy to forget or ignore routine home maintenance tasks. However, identifying minor problems can keep minor issues from turning into major, expensive repairs!
