3 Signs Your Heating System Needs to be Checked

Are you receiving high electric bills or noticing strange noises or smells from your heating system? When our customers call us and mention warning signs like this, we recommend a service check immediately!

Bad Smells

Strong, foul odors are a common warning sign of a heating system that needs attention. The bad smells could be caused by various factors, such as dust accumulation on the furnace, debris trapped in the system, dirty filters or vents, etc (Source: Trane). It’s best to call your HVAC provider to find out what’s going on.

Reminder: Never ignore a rotten egg smell, which may indicate a gas leak!

Strange Noises

If you hear strange noises coming from your heating system, pay attention! You might hear rumbling, screeching, rattling, popping, or, worst of all, a loud bang. These noises could indicate a number of serious issues with your unit, especially if it is on the older side.

Higher than Usual Heating Bills
If your gas and electric bills have been rising, your furnace might be to blame! Heating systems become less efficient as they age, meaning they need to run longer to provide the same amount of heat over time. When the bills start to add up, it might be time to start weighing them against the price of a new, more efficient furnace.

Did you know?
The average age of a well-maintained furnace is about 16 to 20 years. Of course, other factors could warrant an earlier replacement. However, if your furnace is older than 20 years, it’s most likely time to consider replacing it!
